When you enter Disney California Adventure park this summer, you’ll step back in time to Los Angeles of the 1920s and ‘30s on Buena Vista Street. One of the keys to creating a truly immersive environment like this is populating it with interesting and believable characters, so Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Creative Entertainment has been hard at work developing the unique personalities and show experiences that will bring the new entrance avenue to life.
Buena Vista Street is alive with optimism and opportunity. It’s a boulevard of dreams and dreamers… like the Citizens of Buena Vista Street. This cast of characters will interact with guests in this area of the park, creating impromptu laughs, smiles and memories wherever they go.
The Red Car Trolley News Boys roll into town on one of the shiny Red Car Trolleys, belting out “California, Here I Come!” Inspired by the spirit and style of Disney’s “Newsies,” the Red Car Trolley News Boys bring the latest headlines and engage their audience with fun songs of the ‘20s and ‘30s.
Over “On the Sunny Side of the Street,” the musical group Five & Dime arrives in Carthay Circle to jazz things up. This ensemble of friends and relations, headed up by a vivacious singer named Dime, has travelled down Route 66 all the way from Chicago in the hopes of making it big. Like everyone who comes to Buena Vista Street, great things await them just around the corner!

Loving how Five and Dime look.
Oh my! I am so conflicted; while the characters of Hollywood Studios are my least favorite part of the park, I absolutely adore seeing the Dapper Dans, the Disneyland Band, and the firefighter band of Main Street, U.S.A.! The implementation of the Buena Vista Street characters could go either way for me….
After thinking it over, I have decided I ought to place my trust in Disney and keep hoping that the residents of Buena Vista Street will be just as lovable as Jedediah Jones and the Miner 49ers and Billy Hill and the Hillbillies (two more of my favorite entertainment character groups at the Disneyland Resort)! 😀 Crossing my fingers and toes that this is a good decision! 🙂
One little point I’d like to make regarding chronology and the story of BV Street, this is supposed to be the California of the 20s and 30s. Roger Rabbit is set in 1947. So it’s not quite the right time. I love the idea of the classic characters in the area, though, like Clarabelle and Horace and even maybe the 7 Dwarfs!
Speaking of which, will the Carthay Circle be a just-for-show landmark, or will it be an actual theater? It would be cool if it showed, say, classic cartoons or even Snow White!
I’m looking forward to the Citizens of Buena Vista Street. I hope they are as funny as the Citizens of Hollywood! =)
We have the absolute WORST timing this year. We are making our annual pilgrimage the week before the grand opening hoopla.
Here’s hoping that there will be some soft opening activity. I simply adore these new entertainment offerings, it brings the “park” to life is really pluses the theme and experience.
Until mid-June I will have my fingers crossed that we can see these experiences before June 15th.
We’re over the top excited about Buena Vista Street! Can’t wait to step back in time and walk with our parents memories of days gone by! ;D The entertainment is going to be fabulous!!
As an early “Baby Boomer” my life experience has been measured from 1950 forward but I have long been fascinated by the first half of the 20th Century. Main Street USA in Disneyland provides us a nostalgic look back at the turn of that century and we love it! Now Buena Vista Street will transport us to the “Golden Age” of Southern California and Hollywood and the fact that it will start at the beginning of Walt’s “Golden Age” in 1923 makes it that much better!! Reading that you will sprinkle in some Classic Disney characters is simply the “icing on the cake”!! I could not be more excited about the changes that are about to debut at DCA!!!!!

When I read the title that said Characters I though we would see some Characters like. Mickey,Clarabelle Cow,Big Bad Wolf,Three Little Pigs and others.Not the CM in there new outfits. 🙁
Jeffrey, some of our classic Disney characters will make appearances on Buena Vista Street, too. More on that in a future post, but I think you’ll agree that the personalities in these shows have plenty of “character” of their own. In fact, they each have a name and backstory which… well, I don’t want to give away too much just yet! 😉

So cool! These look similar to the entertainment they have around Disney’s Hollywood Studios in WDW! I love watching those characters perform and interact with guests!
I’m really looking forward to Buena Vista Street too, but I think I’m the only one who doesn’t really get into “Streetmosphere” type acts. I’m not really into the barbershop guys over in Disneyland, either. I find them pretty hokey, not cool.
But hey, I can easily ignore these crowd gatherers to get to the ride or attraction I want to.

I cannot tell you how excited I am for Buena Vista Street. On some levels, I’m even more excited for it than Cars Land (and I’m freakin’ excited about Cars Land!). Any chance of the Red Car News Boys actually singing any of the songs from “Newsies?” I can’t wait either way and would understand why they wouldn’t, but, am curious. I know a lot of people who saw the concept art for this early on and would be thrilled to hear a “Newsies” song in it. 🙂

I’ve always been a big fan of “Newsies,” too! I wish I could figure out a way to get to New York this summer to see it on Broadway. Although that story takes place in 1899 and Buena Vista Street is set in the ’20s and ’30s, it’s a fair bet that our production team will “seize” the opportunity to include at least one song in the Red Car News Boys show from the now-classic musical!

Countdown To D23 Blog
So excited after 20 years to see Disney embracing Newsies! This is one of my all-time favorite movies and its so wonderful to see it take its place as a beloved classic. While I would prefer them to be singing the Alan Menkin gems Carrying the Banner and Seize the Day, their presence in Disneyland is a great thing. Hopefully we see them in Disneyworld soon too.
My daughter would like this a lot! Between our busy schedules, maybe one day we can get to Buena Vista Street.

Wow Wow WOW!!! Fantastic stuff! This is exactly the direction I was hoping for with this new California Adventure entrance. The 1920s-30s was such an optimistic, glamorous era of American history and I can’t wait for this entertainment to bring the time period of Buena Vista Street to life. This is SO much better than the park’s hip/edgy shows like High School Musical, I can’t even begin to say.
